The Cellar

 Background

The Cave of KIENTZHEIM-KAYSERSBERG, located on the west of COLMAR, at one mile from KAYSERSBERG, Dr Albert Schweitzer place of birth, founded in 1955, groups together 150 wine growers whose vineyards are situated in the valley of KAYSERSBERG.
This represents an area of 180 hectares, yielding on average 13,000 hectolitres, principally from the communes of KIENTZHEIM, KAYSERSBERG, AMMERSCHWIHR and SIGOLSHEIM.
The Cave is among the top 20 wine producing enterprises in Alsace.

 Technical Description

Grape harvests - vinification

Since 1987, the Cave has received its grapes using a powerful electronic system which enables an extremely rigorous selection of the grapes, not only according to the varietals, but also by quality criteria and according to the different soils and localities.

The harvests which mainly take place in KAYSERSBERG are  exclusively made by hands.

The pressing is carried out in VASLIN presses with BUECHER pneumatics.

In order to retain the aromas and freshness of the wines, fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats.

The total capacity is 30,000 hectolitres, including a micro-fermentation room with 17 stainless steel vats ranging in size from 5 to 40 hectolitres, enabling the vinification of terroirs (localities) and specialities".

Bottling - Storage

  • Since 1993, the Cave has had a bottling room which meets the European standards of hygiene.
  • Moreover, the modernisation of the bottling plant allows us to process 3 million bottles per annum.
  • The wines are available in the following bottle sizes 37.5 cl, 50 cl, 75 cl, 100 cl et 150 cl.
  • The majority of the wines from the localities of the valley of KAYSERSBERG reach their peak after a few years in bottles. We therefore constructed a subterranean cellar in 1970, before the introduction of the compulsory bottling requirements for Alsace wines in 1972, in order not to put on the market recently bottled wines but to allow them to improve in bottle. A second phase was completed in 1984, allowing us to stock about 2 million bottles in ideal storage conditions. Clientele - Markets.

 Clients - Markets

Our wines are sold in FRANCE through normal distribution channels, supermarkets (MATCH EST and NORD, ROND POINT, LECLERC), through wine shops, wine clubs, grocery stores, restaurants and through sales to individuals in shops at the Cave itself and in KAYSERSBERG.

EXPORTS represent about 30 % of our sales, the principal markets being in GERMANY, HOLLAND, the UK, IRLAND, BELGIUM, LUXEMBOURG, DANEMARK, NORWAY, SWEDEN, FINLAND, ESTONIA, SWITZERLAND, ITALY, SPAIN, GREECE, USA, CANADA and AFRICA.
